Acne

Acne is a common skin disorder and may present at any age. It may take many forms: comedonal, pustular and painful lumpy acne. It predominantly affects the face, back of the neck, decolletage, and back. But acne also occurs in the armpits and in the genital area, on the buttocks and at the groin.

Acne is a disorder of the sebaceous gland follicles in the skin. Genetic predisposition and hormonal influences play a major role, but external influences (the wrong cosmetics, smoking, psychological stress) may also contribute to it.

The variety of treatment modalities reflects the complexity of the causes and mechanisms of the disorder. Treatment of acne is only successful if it is applied rigorously and regularly over a long period. It requires time and patience.

Acne should always be treated to prevent scarring and complications. The modalities fall into two groups – drug treatments (pharmaceutical creams, retinoids, antibiotics) and non-drug treatments (laser, photodynamic therapy, chemical peeling, cosmetic products).
